Why I Loved Marvel’s Thunderbolts (Yeah, Even More Than I Expected)

Why I Loved Marvel’s Thunderbolts (Yeah, Even More Than I Expected)

Not Gonna Lie… I Was Skeptical

When Marvel first announced the Thunderbolts movie, I rolled my eyes like any veteran collector who's been burned by flashy trailers and undercooked plotlines before. Another anti-hero team-up? Great. Just what I needed — Guardians with trauma.

But then I saw it. And to quote Deadpool: “Holy s**balls.”*

The Story Actually Meant Something

This wasn’t just a "run in, punch a thing, drop a one-liner, roll credits" kind of Marvel flick. The story was tightly written, emotionally grounded, and (dare I say?) mature. Every character felt like they were fighting their own ghost — not just the villain-of-the-week.

  • Real consequences.

  • Real emotional weight.

  • No multiverse bait-and-switch.

It felt like a Marvel story that remembered comics can have depth and style.

David Harbour + Florence Pugh = Team Gold

Now let’s talk chemistry — David Harbour and Florence Pugh absolutely carried the soul of this film. Their scenes together? Gold.

Red Guardian was still hilarious, but with some real emotional depth this time. And Yelena? She managed to steal every damn scene she was in — again. Pugh is the kind of actress who reminds me of the best-written female leads in comics: fierce, flawed, and human.

Their mentor-little sister dynamic gave this film a heart I wasn’t ready for — and now I want a whole damn series just focused on those two.

The Thunderbolts Finally Feel Like Their Own Thing

This wasn’t just a half-hearted knockoff Suicide Squad. Thunderbolts carved out its own voice. Tonally, it was darker than standard MCU but never dipped into grimdark-for-the-sake-of-it territory.

Every member of the team felt useful, and their motivations mattered. Even Bucky, who could’ve easily been phoned in, felt like an anchor.

And yes, I’ve already started restocking Thunderbolts comics in the shop. Because this movie is about to spike interest like a first appearance after a D+ teaser leak.

Final Thoughts from the Crypt

Marvel’s Thunderbolts didn’t just impress me — it reminded me why I love this stuff. When superhero stories slow down, dig into characters, and actually say something beyond the CGI, we get movies that stick with us.

So yeah — I walked in with low expectations and walked out wishing there was more. This one’s going in the vault next to Winter Soldier and Logan.

If you haven’t seen it yet… the Reaper says: do it.

Bonus Tip: Check the longboxes before the market catches up — Thunderbolts keys are about to start creeping up. And if you’re hunting for ‘em, you know where to find me…
