About the Series:

Created by Marv Wolfman, The Vigilante was one of DC’s most grounded and gritty titles of the 1980s. The series follows Adrian Chase, a New York District Attorney who turns vigilante after his family’s murder. As Chase fights crime outside the law, he descends into a darker psychological struggle, questioning whether justice can exist without morality.

Running for 50 issues, The Vigilante (1983–1988) blends crime noir, action, and psychological drama, predating DC’s later mature-reader approach found in titles like The Question and Watchmen.

About These Issues:

  • #10 (1984): Marv Wolfman-scripted issue; Adrian Chase faces the moral cost of vengeance.

  • #24 (1985): Transition to writer Paul Kupperberg; tone grows darker and more introspective.

  • #34 (1986): Mid-series issue exploring the toll of vigilantism.

  • #37 (1986): Key late-run issue building tension toward the series’ endgame.

  • #41 (1987): Chase’s mental state unravels as the story heads into noir territory.

  • #46 (1987): Late-series issue leading into Vigilante’s dramatic final arc.
